The Deconstruction at Cholmondeley Has Begun

The home at Cholmondeley Children's Charity is coming down and a new purpose built care facility for Canterbury children whose families are experiencing difficulties will be built over the next year.

After a robust and competitive process, Cholmondeley is proud to announce that the architect for the rebuild of Cholmondeley is Royal and Associates, with the principal architect being Perry Royal.

The property committee made up of Board of Governance members and the Cholmondeley General Manager is committed to ensuring that aspects of the history of Cholmondeley will be preserved and that the process to deconstruct this iconic building is completed respectfully and efficiently.

"The Cholmondeley Board is committed to building a fit for 21st Century purpose facility on our Governors Bay site," said Sir Kerry Burke, Cholmondeley President.

"This will reflect its harbor setting and incorporate the original archway, memorial plaque to Margaret Cholmondeley, admissions room and original gates, all of which are seen as connected to our purpose and with the building and land gifted to Canterbury for its children by the late Hugh Cholmondeley.

"Nikau Construction is salvaging the heart rimu from the Home to make banquet style tables for the children to use in the new building.

"Cholmondeley's Vision is to ‘Value Our Children' and we believe that it is essential for children to have a voice in our decision making and the things that directly or indirectly affect them. Mr. Royal will be consulting with the children who use Cholmondeley's services and our dedicated staff to make sure the new building is both welcoming and fun," said Sir Kerry.

This process of deconstruction and rebuilding Cholmondeley is a good test of how Cholmondeley fulfills this vision.
